Sunburst Granny Square – Free Pattern

When I have a knitting or crochet project in mind, I decide to take a trip to the yarn shop to get some materials. I walk in and even though I frequent the same shop, I always feel like I’m in heaven. I feel like that is where I belong and there is nowhere else I’d rather be.

Of course, sometime later, I walk out and snap out of my daze. I look down and realize that I have bought much more yarn than I needed. I get home and look at my purchases and think “Okay, now what?” A week or so later I begin to wonder “Why did I buy this yarn? What was I thinking? What am I going to do with it?” I throw the yarn into my stash and walk away, never to look at it again. Unfortunately, this is not a single occurrence. This happens quite frequently. Now I plan to do something about it.

So…I came up with my Granny Square a Day project. What better way to use up your stash than to make a beautiful granny square blanket? Since I don’t start my second semester of grad school until Jan 28, I plan to make at least one granny square a day and complete my blanket before I go back to school.
My granny square is more of a granny circle but I think the pattern is beautiful. In this post, I will show you how to make a single granny square circle. Here’s how to make the circles and here is what you will need:

Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn in several colors (whatever you have lying around is perfect)
  • A large amount of a base color (this will be the main color of  your blanket as well as your border)
  • Size J crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle to weave ends

Instructions:

1. Magic Circle. 12 DC in magic circle. Join in first DC. (12 sts)

2. Join next color. Ch 2. DC into space between the dc of the previous round. DC into top of the same DC of the previous round (like how you would normally dc into a st). Continue around. Join in beginning DC. (24 sts)

3. Join the next color. Ch 2 into the space between a DC set from previous round. 2 DC in the same space. *3 DC in each space between the DC sets of the previous round.* Repeat * around. Sl st into the beginning DC. (36 sts)

4. Join base color between one of the 3DC sets of the previous round. Ch 2. 2 DC into same sp. Ch 3 (first corner made). *3DC into next space. Ch 1. 3 DC into next space. Ch 1. 3 DC into next space. Ch 3.* Repeat * twice. 3 DC into next space. Ch 1. 3DC into next space. Ch 1. Sl st into beginning DC.

Here you have your granny circle-square. It looks a little round but when you attach the all of squares together it will be more square-ish.

I hope you enjoy this and try the pattern. I would love to hear your feedback if you do try it and I would love to hear any suggestions or modifications that you make to the pattern =)
