Silt Stitch Dishcloth Tutorial and Free Crochet Pattern

Happy Thursday! Welcome to this week’s Let’s Learn a New Crochet Stitch – Kitchen Crochet Edition event. This week I am going to show you the Silt Stitch in this photo tutorial, plus give you instructions for a dishcloth in sizes 6″ x 6″, 9″ x 9″ and 12″ x 12″. Silt Stitch Tutorial & Dishcloth Pattern

Materials:

• Approximately 47 yds of worsted weight cotton yarn in any 2 colors of your choosing:
  • Approximately 30 yds of Color A – I used Lily Sugar ‘n Cream* in Dark Pine.
  • Approximately 17 yds of Color B – I used Lily Sugar ‘n Cream* in White.
• Size I Crochet Hook*
• Yarn Needle* for weaving ends
• Scissors*

Abbreviations:

ch(s) – chain(s)
st(s) – stitch(es)
sl st – slip stitch
dc – double crochet
sc – single crochet
t-ch – turning chain
sk – skip
() – indicates stitch counts

Multiple:

Chain a Multiple of 3

Gauge:

4 sts & 1.8 rows = 1″

Finished Sizes:

6″ x 6″
9″ x 9″
12″ x 12″

Notes:

• This pattern is written in US terms
• Sizing will vary depending on how tightly or loosely you crochet. Gauge is not necessary for this pattern but if you would like to keep the sizing the same, please check your gauge before starting this project.
• This pattern is written for a 6″ x 6″ dishcloth with stitch counts for 9″ x 9″ and 12″ x 12″ written in parenthesis. The 9″ dishcloth stitch counts will be written in italics and the 12″ dishcloth stitch counts will be written in bold.

With Color A, Ch 24

Row 1:  Work 1 dc in 4th ch from hook (count as dc)

Row 1 cont’d: Work 1 dc into each st across. Change to Color B in the last yarn over of the last st, turn.

Row 2: Ch 1 (count as sc)

Row 2 cont’d: Work 2 dc in the first st

Row 2 cont’d: *sk 2 sts, [1 sc, 2 dc] in the next st**

Row 2 cont’d: Repeat from * to ** across until there are 3 sts remaining (2 sts and t-ch)

Row 2 cont’d: Sk the next 2 sts, sc in the t-ch, changing to Color A in the last yarn over of the sc, turn.

Row 3: Ch 3 (count as dc)

Row 3 cont’d: Sk the first st, 1 dc in the next st.

Row 3 cont’d: Work 1 dc into each of the remaining sts across.

Row 3 cont’d: Work 1 dc into the t-ch, change to Color B in the last yarn over of the last st, turn.

Row 4: Repeat Row 2, change to Color A
Row 5: Repeat Row 3, change to Color B
Row 6: Repeat Row 2, change to Color A
Row 7: Repeat Row 3, change to Color B
Row 8: Repeat Row 2, change to Color A
Row 9: Repeat Row 3, change to Color B
Row 10: Repeat Row 2, change to Color A
Row 11: Repeat Row 3, fasten off.

This will give you approximately an 6″ x 6″ square. You can add a simple sc border around the square to finish it off.

Written Instructions:

Ch 24 (36, 48)
Row 1: Work 1 dc into the 4th ch from hook (count as dc), work 1 dc into each st across, turn. Change to Color B (22, 34, 46)
Row 2: Ch 1 (count as sc), 2 dc in the first st, *sk the next 2 sts, [1 sc, 2 dc] into the next st** Repeat from * to ** across until there are 3 sts remaining (2 sts and t-ch), sk the next 2 sts, work 1 sc into the t-ch, changing to Color A in the last yarn over of the sc, turn. (22, 34, 46)
Row 3: Ch 3 (count as dc), work 1 dc into each st across. Change to Color A in the last yarn over of the last st, turn. (22, 34, 46)
Row 4: Repeat Row 2, change to Color A
Row 5: Repeat Row 3, change to Color B
Row 6: Repeat Row 2, change to Color A
Row 7: Repeat Row 3, change to Color B
Row 8: Repeat Row 2, change to Color A
Row 9: Repeat Row 3, change to Color B
Row 10: Repeat Row 2, change to Color A
Row 11: Repeat Row 3, (fasten off for 6″ dishcloth) Change to Color B for other sizes.
Row 12: Repeat Row 2, change to Color A
Row 13: Repeat Row 3, change to Color B
Row 14: Repeat Row 2, change to Color A
Row 15: Repeat Row 3, change to Color B
Row 16: Repeat Row 2, change to Color A
Row 17: Repeat Row 3, (fasten off for 9″ dishcloth) Change to Color B for 12″ dishcloth.
Row 18: Repeat Row 2, change to Color A
Row 19: Repeat Row 3, change to Color B
Row 20: Repeat Row 2, change to Color A
Row 21: Repeat Row 3, change to Color B
Row 22: Repeat Row 2, change to Color A
Row 23: Repeat Row 3, Fasten off, weave all ends.

Finish:

You can add a simple border by joining your yarn with a sl st in one of the stitches, sc evenly around placing 3 sc sts in each corner, join in beginning sc with an invisible join. Fasten off, weave ends.
