Customize Your Crochet by Margaret Hubert, published by Creative Publishing International, is an amazing resource that will help you take crochet garment patterns that are designed for the Classic Rectangle shaped body and help you customize them to fit different body types.

Customize Your Crochet has four cardigan patterns that are written for the Classic Rectangle shaped body. After each pattern, Margaret incorporates the instructions to help you customize your project to fit The Triangle Body, The Inverted Triangle, and The Hourglass. Each cardigan pattern is made up of a different stitch pattern and they range in levels of difficulty. Here is a list of the patterns that you will find in Customize Your Crochet:

  • Double Crochet Lace Cardigan (Skill Level: Easy) p10
  • Bobbles and Bars Cardigan (Skill Level: Experienced) p26
  • Cluster Cardigan (Skill Level: Intermediate) p42
  • Rose Petal Vine Cardigan (Skill Level: Intermediate) p58

Customize Your Crochet is broken down into three sections. The first section, called “Customize the Fit” contains the cardigan patterns and instructions to adjust the patterns to fit your body type. There is also some great information to help you understand your body type and how to take proper measurements.

The second section is called “Finish Like a Pro.” Margaret talks about checking your gauge, counting rows, and the importance of the Foundation Chain. She provides information on different types of seams, attaching sleeves and working borders, and even gives you some insight on how to fix some common mistakes. In this section she also provides a pattern for “Cathie’s Cropped Top.”

In the third section, called “Embellish for Personal Flair,” gives you some motif and edging patterns to help you customize and embellish your pieces to make them your own. There are also tips for pockets, buttonholes, covered buttons, button collars, zipper closures, and shoulder pads.

The patterns in Customize Your Crochet are very well-written with clear and easy-to-read instructions. Each pattern also contains a list of yarn and tools needed, gauge information, and detailed sizing information. Margaret also provides charts for the more visual crocheter. There is also a very helpful list of abbreviations and stitch symbols at the end of the book.
