Melissa Leapman’s Indispensable Stitch Collection for Crocheters, published by Creative Publishing International, is a wonderful crochet stitch dictionary with 200 of Melissa Leapman’s favorite crochet stitch patterns! This book contains many of Melissa Leapman’s own designs as well as other stitch patterns tath she has perfected with many years of experience in the crochet industry.

Indispensable Stitch Collection for Crocheters has full color photos for each stitch pattern. Each stitch pattern has clear, concise, easy-to-read written instructions as well as stitch diagrams, which are written in international crochet symbols. There are tips and tricks on how to read the stitch diagrams on page 161. This is very helpful for beginners and those that are still learning how to use stitch diagrams. On page 160, you will find a list of all of the international crochet symbols.

Each stitch pattern contains the stitch multiple, which is explained in full detail in the beginning of the book. Melissa Leapman also discusses how to incorporate the stitch patterns into different projects. Here are more of the tips and tricks that Melissa Leapman provides in the beginning of the book:

  • What is a Stitch Dictionary?
  • How to Use This Book
  • Reading the Patterns
  • Incorporating the Patterns in Projects
    • Simple Squares and Rectangles
    • Swapping Stitch Patterns within Existing Patterns
    • Designing from Scratch
  • How to Shape Pieces When Working Pattern Stitches

The stitch patterns are all categorized by type. Here is a list of categories that the stitches are sectioned into:

  • Simple Solid Patterns
  • Shell and Fan Stitch Patterns
  • Openwork and Lace Patterns
  • Textured Patterns
  • Colorwork Patterns
  • Edgings

I am obsessed with stitch dictionaries and I am really falling in love with this one. There are so many amazing stitch patterns that would be great for any project. Here are a few of my favorite stitch patterns from Melissa Leapman’s Indispensable Stitch Collection for Crocheters:

Gossamer Lace p66, excerpted from Melissa Leapman’s Indispensable Stitch Collection for Crocheters by Melissa Leapman, Creative Publishing International, 2016; used with permission. All rights reserved.
Interlocked Stripes p123, excerpted from Melissa Leapman’s Indispensable Stitch Collection for Crocheters by Melissa Leapman, Creative Publishing International, 2016; used with permission. All rights reserved.

Posy Pattern p87, excerpted from Melissa Leapman’s Indispensable Stitch Collection for Crocheters by Melissa Leapman, Creative Publishing International, 2016; used with permission. All rights reserved.
Triangle Shells p24, excerpted from Melissa Leapman’s Indispensable Stitch Collection for Crocheters by Melissa Leapman, Creative Publishing International, 2016; used with permission. All rights reserved.

If you are a beginner and need help with the basics, there is a section at the end of the book with different crochet techniques to help you get started. These basic techniques include the slip knot, chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, and more. Each of the basic stitches comes with detailed written instructions as well as an illustration to demonstrate the stitch.

You can create so many fabulous projects with the beautiful stitch patterns that are shown in Melissa Leapman’s Indispensable Stitch Collection for Crocheters. There are stitch patterns that are perfect for hats, scarves, shawls, afghans, and more! For more about Melissa Leapman’s Indispensable Stitch Collection for Crocheters, check out the Quarto Knows website and look for this fabulous book at your local or online book retailer for $24.99.

I am always looking for new stitches, but didn’t know if it would be worth the purchase. To many times I have found out that I couldn’t follow how the stitch was done or few pictures to help with. Thanks for a great review, I know this is one book that I will be buying.

This book would be perfect for me. I’ve become a little bored with sc, hdc, dc, etc. With this I could choose a stitch & know what it’s going to look like. Love, love, love.
