Modern Tapestry Crochet

Modern Tapestry Crochet contains 20 gorgeous patterns utilizing tapestry crochet. There are a variety of patterns such as scarves, hats, bags, and more. The colorwork and designs used in these patterns make for beautiful and unique pieces.

The book starts off with an introduction from the author, Alessandra Hayden. She talks about her crochet background and love for tapestry crochet. We then move on to the materials needed for the projects in this book and an in-depth section on tapestry crochet techniques. Alessandra discusses the basic techniques used in tapestry crochet and also talks about chart reading and color changes. She also talks about working a flat project versus working in the round. There are also some great tips for finishing and blocking your projects.

We then move on to the patterns. Each of the patterns in this book contains size information, yarn and crochet hook(s) used, other notions needed, gauge information and pattern notes. The patterns are clear and easy to read. Each pattern comes with a chart to help you visualize the color changes. The pattern sizes are shown in inches and centimeters to satisfy both US and International readers.

At the end of Modern Tapestry Crochet, there is a wonderful stitch guide that teaches you the basic stitches used in the book. There is also an abbreviation list to help you understand the stitch abbreviations used in the book. There is also a handy yarn source guide so that you can find the beautiful yarns used in the projects. At the very end of the book, you will find the author’s biography, a sweet dedication to her family, and a section of acknowledgements. There is also an index to help you find sections of the book easier.

All of the projects in Modern Tapestry Crochet are just so beautiful. The mix of colors and patterns just make each project unique and interesting. There are so many great tips in the book to help you create a unique project that you can make your own. These gorgeous projects are all made using a variety of beautiful yarns including yarn from Berroco, Cascade, Malabrigo, Knit Picks, Lion Brand, Quince & Co, and Big Twist Yarns.

In my Art History course we had learned about some historic tapestries; “Bayeux Tapestry” and also a beautiful series of six tapestries known as the “Unicorn Tapestries.” I had never considered making anything remotely like those, let alone anything called a tapestry. With the help of this book I believe I will be able to do just that. This book is on the top of my wish list!
