Welcome to the 2020 Scarf and Hat of the Month Club!

I am so sad that this is the last pattern of the year but I am so excited to share some new pattern with you in 2021! This month, I have a super simple chunky hat made with Lion Brand Thick and Quick and Wool Ease Thick and Quick, which matches my scarf from last week! Easy Chunky Striped Hat

Add to Ravelry Queue and Favorites

Materials:

• Approximately 53-76 yds of Category 6 Super Bulky Yarn in two colors:
  • Approximately 43-63 yds of Color A; I used Lion Brand Thick and Quick* in the color Navy
  • Approximately 10-13 yds of Color B; I used Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick* in the Fisherman colorway
• Size P 10mm Crochet Hook*
• Yarn Needle* for weaving ends
• Scissors*

Abbreviations:

ch(s) – chain(s)
dc – double crochet
hdc – half double crochet
sc – single crochet
sk – skip
st(s) – stitch(es)
() – indicates stitch counts
* – indicates instructions to be repeated

Gauge:

8 stitches & 5.4 rows = 4″ (in pattern stitch)

Finished Sizes:

• 3-5 Years – Fits 20″ head size
• 6-10 Years – Fits 21″ head size
• Adult Small – Fits 22″ head size
• Adult Medium – Fits 23″ head size
• Adult Large – Fits 24″ head size

Notes:

• This pattern is written in US terms.
• Sizing will vary depending on how tightly or loosely you crochet. If you would like to keep the sizing the same, please check your gauge before starting this project.
• This hat is worked in the round and is joined at the end of each round.

Instructions:

3-5 Years:

With Color A, Magic Circle, ch 1.
Round 1: Work 9 sc into the magic circle, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (9 sts)
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 hdc into each st around, join into the beginning hdc with a sl st. (18 sts)
Round 3: Ch 3, 1 dc into the first st, 2 dc into the next st, *1 dc into the next st, 2 dc into the next st; Repeat from * around, join into the beginning dc with a sl st. (27 sts)
Round 4: Ch 1, 1 sc into the first st, 1 sc into the next st, 2 sc into the next st, *1 sc into each of the next 2 sts, 2 sc into the next st; Repeat from * around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (36 sts)
Round 5: Ch 1, 1 hdc into each st around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (36 sts)
Round 6: Ch 3, 1 dc into each st around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (36 sts)

Change to Color B

Round 7: Ch 1, 1 sc into each st around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (36 sts)
Round 8: Ch 1, 1 hdc into each st around, join into the beginning hdc with a sl st. (36 sts)

Change to Color A

Round 9: Ch 3, 1 dc into each st around, join into the beginning dc with a sl st. (36 sts)
Round 10: Ch 1, 1 sc into each st around, join into the beginning sc with an invisible join, fasten off, weave all ends. (36 sts)

Finish:

• Using long tail from the top of the hat and a yarn needle, close up the hole in the center of the hat by weaving the yarn through the front loop of each stitch of the last round. Pull the yarn taught to cinch the center closed and weave yarn around the center to close any gap that may remain.
• Weave in all remaining ends
• Add pom pom to the top if desired.

6-10 Years:

With Color A, Magic Circle, ch 1.

Round 5: Ch 1, 1 hdc into each st around, join into the beginning hdc with a sl st. (38 sts)

Change to Color B
