Baby Bat Sack Hat – Free Crochet Pattern

My contribution is this adorable Baby Bat Sack Hat. It is perfect for an impromptu Halloween photo shoot! This hat comes in several child sizes from preemie to 3-5 years. I hope you enjoy it. Happy Crocheting!

Notes:

  • This pattern is written in US terms.
  • Sizing will vary depending on how tightly or loosely you crochet. If you would like to keep the sizing the same, please check your gauge before starting this project.
  • This pattern is worked flat and then seamed at two ends to form the sack hat.
  • Embroidering the face:
    • To embroider the mouth, I basically took my yarn with a yarn needle and made a straight line to create the mouth. I then stitched over it to keep the line in place.
    • To embroider the fangs, I just stitched one line on each side of the mouth.

Ribbing:

With H Hook and Color A, Leaving a 12″ long tail,
Ch 7
Row 1:
 1 sc into the 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc into each remaining st across, turn. (6 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1, 1 sc into the first st, 1 sc into the BL of each of the next 4 sts, 1 sc into the last st, turn. (6 sts)
Row 3-41: Repeat Row 2

Turn your work so that you are now working into the side of Rows 1-41, sc 41 sts evenly across, turn. (41 sts)

You will now be working on the main part of the hat.

Row 1: Ch 1, 1 sc into the first st, 1 sc into each st across, turn. (41 sts)
Row 2-7: Repeat Row 2
Row 8: Repeat Row 2, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing.

Bat Eyes (Make 2 sets)

With G Hook and Color A,

Finish:

  • Turn your work inside out. Bring the ends together so that the beginning of the rows meets the ends of the rows.
  • Using the first yarn tail and a yarn needle, whip stitch or mattress seam the side of the hat closed. Fasten off.
  • Using the last yarn tail and yarn needle, whip stitch or mattress seam the top of the hat closed. Fasten off.
  • Attach ears onto each corner of the hat using yarn tail and needle.
