Abbreviations:

ch – chain
sc – single crochet
sc dec – single crochet decrease
sk – skip
sp(s) – space(s)
st(s) – stitch(es)
t-ch – turning chain
() – indicates stitch counts
* – indicates instructions to be repeated

Gauge:

16 stitches & 16 rows = 4″ (in sc)

Finished Size:

Approximately 4.5″ long and 5.5″ around

Notes:

  • This pattern is written in US terms.
  • Sizing will vary depending on how tightly or loosely you crochet. Gauge is not necessary for this pattern but if you would like to keep the sizing the same, please check your gauge before starting this project.
  • This holder fits a standard size gift card or credit card.

Instructions:

Mitten:

With Color A,
Ch 19. Without twisting, join in beginning ch with a sl st. Place a stitch marker into the bottom loop of the beginning ch. You will need to mark this st to be used later in the edging of the mitten.
Round 1: Ch 1, 1 sc into each st around, join in beginning sc with a sl st. (18 sts)
Round 2-3: Repeat Round 1
Round 4: Ch 1, 1 sc into the first st, 1 sc into the next st, 2 sc into the next st, *1 sc into each of the next 2 sts, 2 sc into the next st; Repeat from * around, join in beginning sc with a sl st. (24 sts)
Round 5: Ch 1, 1 sc into each st around, join in beginning sc with a sl st. (24 sts)
Round 6-9: Repeat Round 5
Round 10: Ch 1, 1 sc into the first st, 1 sc into each of the next 17 sts, join in beginning sc with a sl st leaving remaining 6 sts unworked. (This is where the thumb will go.) (18 sts)
Round 11: Ch 1, 1 sc into each st around, join in beginning sc with a sl st. (18 sts)
Round 12-15: Repeat Round 11
Round 16: Ch 1, *sc dec over the next 2 sts; Repeat from * around, join in beginning sc with a sl st. (9 sts)
Round 17: Ch 1, 1 sc into the first st, *sc dec over the next 2 sts; Repeat from * around, join in beginning sc with a sl st. (5 sts)
Round 18: Ch 1, 1 sc into the first st, [sc dec over the next 2 sts] twice, join in beginning sc with a sl st, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing. (3 sts)

Thumb:

Join Color A with a sl st into the first unworked st of Round 10.
Round 1: Ch 1, 1 sc into each st around, join in beginning sc with a sl st. (6 sts)
Round 2-3: Repeat Round 1
Round 4: Ch 1, *sc dec over the next 2 sts; Repeat from * around, join in beginning sc with a sl st, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing. (3 sts)

Trim:

Join Color B into the bottom loop of the ch marked off in the beginning with a sl st.
Round 1: Ch 1, 1 sc into the bottom loop of each ch around, join in beginning sc with a sl st. (18 sts)
Round 2: Ch 1, 1 sc into each st around, join in beginning sc with a sl st, fasten off, weave all ends. (18 sts)

Closure loop:

Join Color B with a sl st into the 17th st of Round 2 of the trim.
Ch 16, sl st into the same st, fasten off, weave all ends.

Finish:

  • Using the yarn tails and a yarn needle, close the holes in the top of the mitten and the thumb by sewing around the sts to cinch the holes closed.
  • Weave all remaining ends.
  • Using a needle and thread, sew button into place so that it keeps the closure loop taught.
