Basic Striped Beanie – Free Crochet Pattern

A few years ago I wrote the pattern for my Basic Striped Beanie for a NICU Challenge. I never published it to my blog because I had the intention of writing up several sizes and making into a premium pattern. Months went by and the yarn that I originally used to create the hat had been discontinued. I knew I had to update the pattern and find a new yarn to make the hat so that I could finally post it. Months turned into years. I recently accidentally stumbled on the document that contained the original pattern and decided that it was finally time to update it. So here it finally is! Basic Striped Beanie

Materials:

• Approximately 40-105 yds of Category 4 Medium Weight Yarn in three colors:
  • Approximately 26-68 yds of Color A; I used Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton* in Succulent
  • Approximately 6-15 yds of Color B; I used Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton* in White
  • Approximately 8-22 yds of Color C; I used Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton* in Silver
• Size I 5.5 mm Crochet Hook*
• Yarn Needle* for weaving ends
• Scissors*

dc – double crochet
hdc – half double crochet
sc – single crochet

Gauge:

14 stitches & 12 rows = 4″ (in hdc)

Finished Sizes:

• Preemie – Fits 12″ head size
• Newborn – Fits 13.5″ head size
• 0-3 Months – Fits 16″ head size
• 3-6 Months – Fits 17″ head size
• 6‐12 Months – Fits 18″ head size
• 1-3 years – Fits 19″ head size
• 3-5 years – Fits 20″ head size
• 6-10 years – Fits 21″ head size

Notes:

• This pattern is written in US terms.
• Sizing will vary depending on how tightly or loosely you crochet. If you would like to keep the sizing the same, please check your gauge before starting this project.
• This pattern begins with a magic circle (or magic ring, or adjustable loop). If you are not familiar with this technique, please see the tutorial listed below.
• Color changes are made in the last yarn over of the last stitch of the round.
• This hat is finished off with an invisible join. See tutorial linked below for more information.

Instructions:

Preemie:

With Color A, Magic Circle, ch 1.
Round 1: 7 hdc into the magic circle, join into the beginning hdc with a sl st. (7 sts)
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 hdc into each st around, join into the beginning hdc with a sl st. (14 sts)
Round 3: Ch 1, *1 hdc into the next st, 2 hdc into the next st; Repeat from * around, join into the beginning hdc with a sl st. (21 sts)
Round 4: Ch 1, *1 hdc into each of the next 2 sts, 2 hdc into the next st; Repeat from * around, join into the beginning hdc with a sl st. (28 sts)
Round 5: Ch 1, *1 hdc into each of the next 3 sts, 2 hdc into the next st; Repeat from * around, join into the beginning hdc with a sl st. (35 sts)

Change to Color B

Round 6: Ch 1, 1 sc into each st around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (35 sts)

Change to Color C

Round 7: Ch 3, 1 dc into each st around, join into the beginning dc with a sl st. (35 sts)

Change to Color B

Round 8: Ch 1, 1 sc into each st around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (35 sts)

Change to Color A

Round 9-10: Ch 1, 1 hdc into each st around, join into the beginning hdc with a sl st. (35 sts)
Round 11-13: Repeat rounds 6-8. Fasten off and join the last st with an invisible join. (35 sts)

Finish:
