Butterfly and Joy Squares – Free Crochet Pattern

Materials:
- Hook 4.00 mm
- Double knitting light worsted yarn in green, dark pink, yellow, pink, cream and dark brown (small amounts for appliqués)
- Double knitting light worsted yarn in aqua & pink (approx 25gr)
- Scissors & Yarn Needle
Abbreviations:
I use US Crochet stitch terminology
SC – single crochet
DC – double crochet
Gauge:
Gauge is NOT important for this project – your squares just need to be the same size when used in a project
Finished Size:
14 cm x 14 cm
Notes:
Woven Stitch is worked on a even numbered foundation chain his pattern is worked in multiples of 16 + 1 for the turning CHAIN
Instructions:
The Square
CH 30
FOUNDATION ROW: Work 1 SC into the 4th CH from hook, *CH 1, SKIP 1 CH, work 1 SC into next CH, rep from * until end, TURN
ROW 1: CH2, work 1 SC into first CH space, *CH1, work 1 SC into next CH space rep from * until end, TURN
Row 1 forms the pattern
REPEAT ROW 1 UNTIL PIECE MEASURES APPROXIAMTELY 14 CM X 14 CM
Fasten off and weave in ends
Butterfly Square Appliqués:
The Hill:
With green yarn
Make a magic circle
Row 1: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 5 DC into circle (6 DC), TURN
Row 2: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 2 DC into each DC until end (12 DC), TURN
Row 3: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST as 3 CH, work 1 DC into next ST. *Work 2 DC into next ST, work 1 DC into next ST. Repeat from * until end (18 DC) – DO NOT TURN – continue working into the rows on the bottom, work 2 SC into each Row (16 SC)
Fasten off and a leave a tail for sewing
The Butterfly:
Body –
With dark pink yarn
CH 10
Work 2 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into next 7 CH, work 4 SC into last CH – continue along the bottom of the chain, work 1 SC into next 7 CH, work 2 SC into last CH, SL ST into first SC worked.
Fasten off and a leave a tail for sewing
Wings-
With cream yarn
Left:
Make a magic circle
Row 1: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 5 DC into circle (6 DC), TURN
Row 2: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 2 DC into same ST, work [1 DC, 1 TR, 1 DC] into next ST, SL ST into next 3 STS, CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work [1DC, 2 TR] into same ST, work [1 TR, 2 DC ] into 3rd of 3 CH, SL ST into same ST.

The Flower:
Center –
With yellow yarn
Make a magic circle
Rnd 1: Work 6 SC into circle
Rnd 2: Note – work in back loops only – Work 2 SC into each SC (12 SC)
Fasten off and a leave a tail for sewing
Petals –
With purple yarn – join with a SL ST into first back loop of last yellow round
Rnd 1: * (CH3, 1 DC, CH 3, SL ST) – all in one ST, SL ST into next 2 STS – repeat from * until end (6 Petals made)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Joy:
The Letter J –
With dark pink yarn
CH 12
Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into next 6 CH, work 3 SC into next CH, and work 1 SC into next 3 CH, and work 3 SC into last CH, TURN
Work 3 SC into first SC, work 1 SC into next 5 STS, work 3 SC into next ST, work 1 SC into next 8 STS and SL ST all around letter
Fasten off and a leave a tail for sewing
The Letter Y –
With dark pink yarn
CH 14
Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into next 5 CH, work 5 SC into next CH, work 1 SC into next 6 CH – continue on the inside of the V that is formed and SL ST into each ST.
SL ST into first SC worked, work 1 SC into same ST, work 1 SC into next 6 SC, CH 6, work 1 HDC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 DC into next 4 CH, SKIP center SC of previous 5 SC worked, work 1 SC into next SC, work 1 SC into next 7 SC, join with a SL ST into last SC. TURN and work a SL ST into each ST on the outside of the Y.
Fasten off and a leave a tail for sewing
The Letter E –
With dark pink yarn
CH 17
Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into next 3 CH, work 3 SC into next CH, work 1 SC into next 6 CH, work 3 SC into next CH, work 1 SC into next 4 CH,TURN
Work 1 SC into next 5 STS, work 3 SC into next ST, work 1 SC into next 8 STS, work 3 SC into next ST, work 1 SC into next 5 STS TURN
SL ST all around letter – when you reach the inner center – SL ST into 2 STS, CH 3, work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into next – continue with SL ST all around
Fasten off and a leave a tail for sewing
The Flower O:
Repeat instructions for flower – changing purple yarn for aqua
