Herringbone Twist Headband Earwarmer

Materials:

Skill Level:

Easy

Abbreviations:

ch – chain
hdc – half double crochet
hhdc – herringbone half double crochet
sk – skip
st(s) – stitch(es)
t-ch – turning chain
() – indicates stitch counts
* – indicates instructions to be repeated

Gauge:

16 stitches & 11.6 rows = 4″ (in pattern stitch)

Finished Sizes:

  • 6-10 Years – Fits 19″ Head size
  • Teen – Fits 20″ Head size
  • Adult Small – Fits 21″ Head size
  • Adult Medium – Fits 22″ Head size
  • Adult Large – Fits 23″ Head size

Notes:

  • This pattern is written in US terms.
  • Sizing will vary depending on how tightly or loosely you crochet. If you would like to keep the sizing the same, please check your gauge before starting this project.
  • This project is worked flat and then seamed at the ends to create a headband.
  • Finishing instructions are located at the bottom of the post.

Special Stitches:

Herringbone Half Double Crochet (hhdc):

  • Yarn over, insert hook into indicated stitch.
  • Yarn over and pull through the stitch and the first loop on the hook. 2 loops on hook are remaining.
  • Yarn over, pull through the remaining 2 loops on the hook.

Instructions:

6-10 Years:

With Color A,
Ch 17

Row 1: 1 hdc into the 2nd ch from hook, 1 hdc into each remaining st across, turn. (16 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1, 1 hdc into the first st, 1 hhdc into each of the next 14 sts, 1 hdc into the last st, turn. (16 sts)
Rows 3-10: Repeat Row 2
Change to Color B
Rows 11-43: Repeat Row 2
Change to Color A
Rows 44-52:
Repeat Row 2
Row 53: Repeat Row 2, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing.


Teen:

With Color A,
Ch 17

Row 1: 1 hdc into the 2nd ch from hook, 1 hdc into each remaining st across, turn. (16 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1, 1 hdc into the first st, 1 hhdc into each of the next 14 sts, 1 hdc into the last st, turn. (16 sts)
Rows 3-10: Repeat Row 2
Change to Color B
Rows 11-46: Repeat Row 2
Change to Color A
Rows 47-55:
Repeat Row 2
Row 56: Repeat Row 2, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing.


Adult Small:

With Color A,
Ch 17

Rows 12-50: Repeat Row 2
Change to Color A
Rows 51-60:
Repeat Row 2
Row 61: Repeat Row 2, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing.


Adult Large:

With Color A,
Ch 17

Row 1: 1 hdc into the 2nd ch from hook, 1 hdc into each remaining st across, turn. (16 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1, 1 hdc into the first st, 1 hhdc into each of the next 14 sts, 1 hdc into the last st, turn. (16 sts)
Rows 3-11: Repeat Row 2
Change to Color B
Rows 12-53: Repeat Row 2
Change to Color A
Rows 54-63:
Repeat Row 2
Row 64: Repeat Row 2, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing.


Finish:

  • Lay your headband flat. Bring the ends together so that they meet in the middle.
  • Fold each end in half lengthwise and pinch them at the ends.
  • Place the two folded ends together, sandwiching them together and making sure the stitches are aligned.
  • Using the yarn tail and yarn needle, stitch the ends together, making sure to work through all four pieces of the fabric.
  • Fasten off, weave all ends.
  • Turn the headband inside out so that the knot is on the inside.
