Let’s Learn a New Crochet Stitch! – Basket Stitch Tutorial
It’s time to learn a new crochet stitch! This week I am going to show you the Basket Stitch. This stitch is gorgeous because it is reminiscent of little baskets! It would be a great stitch for an afghan. I hope you enjoy the tutorial! Happy Crocheting!

Basket Stitch Tutorial and Afghan Square

Materials:
- Category 4 Medium Weight Yarn in any color of your choosing. I used Lily Sugar ‘n Cream* for this example.
- Size I 5.5 mm Crochet Hook*
- Yarn Needle*
- Scissors*

Abbreviations:
ch – chain
ch-sp – chain space
dc – double crochet
sk – skip
sp – space
st(s) – stitch(es)
t-ch – turning chain
WS – wrong side
* – indicates instructions to be repeated
Multiple:
Multiple of 6+1
Gauge:
4 stitches & 1 row = 1″
Special Stitches:
- V Stitch – Work (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) in designated stitch
- Double V Stitch – Work (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in designated stitch
Instructions:
Row 1 (WS): Work 1 dc in the 5th ch from hook (beginning of V Stitch)
Row 1 cont’d: dc in same st (V Stitch completed)
Row 1 cont’d: *sk 2 sts, V Stitch (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) into the next st;
Row 1 cont’d: Repeat from * across until there are 2 sts left.
Row 1 cont’d: sk next st, 1 dc in the last st, turn.
Row 2 cont’d: Sk the first st and the next st, work 2 dc into the ch-sp of the V Stitch from previous row (beginning of Double V Stitch)
Row 2 cont’d: 2 dc into the same stitch (Double V Stitch completed)
Row 2 cont’d: *Ch 1, sk the next V Stitch, work 1 Double V Stitch in the ch-sp of the next V Stitch;
Row 2 cont’d: Repeat from * across until the last dc of the last Double V Stitch. Work the last dc of the last Double V Stitch, leaving the last 2 loops on the hook.
Row 2 cont’d: yarn over, insert hook into the t-ch, pull up a loop
Row 2 cont’d: yarn over, pull through 2 loops
Row 2 cont’d: yarn over, pull though all 3 loops, turn.
Row 3 cont’d: Work a V Stitch into the next ch-sp (Middle of Double V Stitch)
Row 3 cont’d: Work a V Stitch in the next ch-sp (Ch-1 sp between Double V Stitches) and in each ch-sp across
Row 3 cont’d: Work 1 dc into the top of the t-ch, turn.
Row 4 cont’d: Work 1 dc into the first st
Row 4 cont’d: sk next V Stitch, work a Double V Stitch into ch-sp of next V stitch;
Row 4 cont’d: Repeat from * across until 1 V Stitch remains
Row 4 cont’d: ch 1, sk V Stitch, 2 dc into the t-ch, turn.
Row 5: Repeat Row 3
Row 6-9: Repeat Row 2-5
Row 10-11: Repeat Rows 2-3
This will give you approximately an 7 1/2″ x 7 1/2″ square. You can add a sc border around the square to bring it up to 8″.
