Ollie the Owl – Free Crochet Pattern

Materials:

• Approximately 53 yds of Category 4 Medium Weight Yarn in 3 colors:
  • Approximately 41 yds of Color A; I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran* yarn in 604, Misty Grey
  • Approximately 8 yds of Color B; I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran* yarn in 601, Paper White
  • Approximately 4 yds of Color C; I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran* yarn in 623, Buttercup Yellow
• Size H 5 mm Furls Streamline Crochet Hook*
• Yarn Needle* for sewing and weaving ends
• Scissors*

• This project is worked in the round. You will join after each round, where indicated.

Body:
With Color A:
Magic Circle, ch 1
Round 1: Work 6 sc into the magic circle, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (6 sts)
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc into each st around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (12 sts)
Round 3: Ch 1, *1 sc into the next st, 2 sc into the next st; Repeat from * around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (18 sts)
Round 4: Ch 1, *2 sc into the next st, 1 sc into each of the next 2 sts; Repeat from * around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (24 sts)
Round 5: Ch 1, *1 sc into each of the next 3 sts, 2 sc into the next st; Repeat from * around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (30 sts)
Round 6: Ch 1, *2 sc into the next st, 1 sc into each of the next 4 sts; Repeat from * around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (36 sts)
Round 7: Ch 1, 1 sc into each st around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (36 sts)
Rounds 8-12: Repeat Round 7
Round 13: Ch 1, *1 sc into each of the next 4 sts, 1 sc dec over the next 2 sts; Repeat from * around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (30 sts)
Round 14: Ch 1, *1 sc into each of the next 3 sts, 1 sc dec over the next 2 sts; Repeat from * around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (24 sts)
Round 15: Ch 1, *1 sc into each of the next 2 sts, 1 sc dec over the next 2 sts; Repeat from * around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (18 sts)
Round 16: Ch 1, *1 sc into the next st, 1 sc dec over the next 2 sts; Repeat from * around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing. (12 sts)

Eyes (Make 2)
With Color B,
Round 1: Work 6 sc into the magic circle, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (6 sts)
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc into each st around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing. (12 sts)

Wings (Make 2):
With Color A:
Ch 6,
Row 1: 1 sc into the 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc into each remaining st across, turn. (5 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1, sl st into the first st, 1 sc into each of the next 3 sts, sl st into the last st, turn. (3 sts)
Row 3: Ch 1, sl st into the first st, 1 sc into the next st, sl st into the last st, turn. (1 st)
Row 4: Ch 1, 1 sc into the next st, turn. (1 st)
Sc evenly around the entire wing, making 3 sc into each corner, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing.

Beak:
With Color C,
Magic Circle, ch 1
Round 1: Work 3 sc into the Magic Circle, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (3 sts)
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc into the first st, 1 sc into each of the last 2 sts, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (4 sts)
Round 3: Ch 1, 2 sc into the first st, 1 sc into the next st, 2 sc into the next st, 1 sc into the last st, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing. (6 sts)

Finish:

• Begin stuffing the owl body. Once you are satisfied with the amount of stuffing, using the yarn tail and yarn needle, sew the top of the owl’s head closed using a mattress stitch seam. Make sure to keep the corners pointed for the ears. I like to pinch the ears while I’m stitching the head closed and put a little stuffing into the corners to make the ears more pronounced.
• Attach the safety eyes to the center of the eye pieces. Position the eyes onto the front of the head and attach with the yarn needle and yarn tails using the whip stitch method.
• Center the beak in between the eyes and attach with the yarn needle and yarn tail using the whip stitch method.
• Position the wings onto either side of the body and attach with the yarn needle and yarn tails, using the whip stitch method.
• Weave all ends.
