Gauge:

14 stitches & 18 rows = 4″ (in sc)

Notes:

  • This pattern is written in US terms.
  • Sizing will vary depending on how tightly or loosely you crochet. If you would like to keep the sizing the same, please check your gauge before starting this project.
  • The head, body, arms, legs, and tail of this monkey are worked in a continuous round. This is where the stitch marker comes in handy. Do not join unless specified.

Instructions:

Monkey Face:
With Color B and size G hook,
Ch 7
Row 1: sc into the 2nd chain from hook, 1 sc into each remaining st across, turn. (6 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc into the first st, 1 sc into each of the next 4 sts, 2 sc into the last st, turn. (8 sts)
Row 3: Ch 1, 1 sc into each st across, turn. (8 sts)
Note: The curved part of the face will be worked in 2 halves.
Row 4: Ch 1, 1 sc into each of the next 4 sts, turn. (4 sts)
Row 5: Ch 1, sk the first st, 1 sc into each of the next 2 sts, sl st into the last st, turn (4 sts)
Row 6: Ch 1, sk the sl st from the previous row, 1 sc into the next st, sl st into the last st, fasten off (2 sts)
For the other side of the face, join yarn in 5th st of Row 4.
Row 4 cont’d: Ch 1, 1 sc into the same st as the join, 1 sc into each of the next 3 sts. (4 sts)
Repeat Rows 5 and 6. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing

Outer Ear (Make 2):
With Color A and size H Hook,
Magic circle, ch 1.
Round 1: Work 6 sc into the magic circle, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (6 sts)
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc into each st around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (12 sts)
Round 3: Ch 1, 1 sc into each of the next 10 sts, sl st into each of the last 2 sts, join into the beginning sc with a sl st, fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. (12 sts)

Inner Ear (Make 2):
With Color B and size G Hook,
Magic circle, ch 1.
Round 1: Work 6 sc into the magic circle, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (6 sts)
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc into each st around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (12 sts)
Round 3: Ch 1, 1 sc into each of the next 10 sts, sl st into each of the last 2 sts, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (12 sts)

Tummy:
With Color B and size G Hook,
Magic circle, ch 1.
Round 1: Work 6 sc into the magic circle, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (6 sts)
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc into each st around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st, fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. (12 sts)

Head:
With Color A and H Hook,
Magic circle, ch 1.
Round 1: Work 6 sc into the magic circle. (6 sts)
Round 2: 2 sc into each st around. (12 sts)
Round 3: *1 sc into the next st, 2 sc into the next st; Repeat from * around. (18 sts)
Round 4: *1 sc into each of the next 2 sts, 2 sc into the next st; Repeat from * around. (24 sts)
Round 5: *1 sc into each of the next 3 sts, 2 sc into the next st; Repeat from * around. (30 sts)
Rounds 6-11: 1 sc into each st around. (30 sts)
Round 12: *1 sc into each of the next 3 sts, sc dec over the next 2 sts; Repeat from * around. (24 sts)
Round 13: *1 sc into each of the next 2 sts, sc dec over the next 2 sts; Repeat from * around. (18 sts)
Round 14: *1 sc into the next st, sc dec over the next 2 sts; Repeat from * around. (12 sts)
Start stuffing the head. Before finishing off, sew on the face, attach the safety eyes, and embroider the nose using the embroidery floss and embroidery needle. Finish stuffing until the head looks round and full.
Round 15: *1 sc dec over the next 2 sts; Repeat from * around, fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. (6 sts)

Body:
With Color A and H Hook,
Magic circle, ch 1.
Round 1: 8 sc into the magic circle. (8 sts)
Round 2: 2 sc into each st around. (16 sts)
Round 3: *1 sc into the next st, 2 sc into the next st; Repeat from * around. (24 sts)
Round 4: *1 sc into each of the next 2 sts, 2 sc into the next st; Repeat from * around. (32 sts)
Round 5-10: 1 sc into each st around. (32 sts)
Round 11: *1 sc into each of the next 2 sts, sc dec over the next 2 sts; Repeat from * around. (24 sts)
Round 12: *1 sc into the next st, sc dec over the next 2 sts; Repeat from * around. (16 sts)
Start stuffing the body.
Round 13: *1 sc dec over the next 2 sts; Repeat from * around. (8 sts)
Round 14: *1 sc dec over the next 2 sts; Repeat from * around, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing. (4 sts)
Sew on the white tummy center using a yarn needle and whip stitch.

Arms (Make 2):
With Color B and G Hook,
Magic Circle, ch 1.
Round 1: 4 sc into the magic circle. (4 sts)
Round 2: 2 sc into each st around. (8 sts)
Round 3: 1 sc into each st around. (8 sts)
Change to Color A.
Round 4: *1 sc dec over the next 2 sts; Repeat from * around. (4 sts)
Round 5-11: 1 sc into each st around. (4 sts)
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Legs (Make 2):
With Color B and G Hook,
Magic Circle, ch 1.
Round 1:
6 sc into the magic circle. (6 sts)
Round 2: 2 sc into each st around. (12 sts)
Round 3: *1 sc into the next st, 2 sc into the next st; Repeat from * around. (18 sts)
Round 4: 1 sc into each st around. (18 sts)
Change to Color A.
Round 5: *1 sc into the next st, sc dec over the next 2 sts; Repeat from * around. (12 sts)
Round 6: *1 sc dec over the next 2 sts; Repeat from * around. (6 sts)
Round 7-12: 1 sc into each st around. (6 sts)
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Tail:
With Color A and G Hook,
Magic Circle, ch 1.
Round 1: 4 sc into the magic circle. (4 sts)
Round 2-25: 1 sc into each st around. (4 sts)
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Finish:

  • First, attach the inner ear to the outer ear by laying the inner ear on top of the outer ear. Using a yarn needle and the tail from the inner ear, whip stitch the two pieces together. Fasten off and weave the ends. Do the same for the other ear.
  • Next, attach the ears to the head by positioning them, one at a time, and sewing them to the side of the head using the yarn needle and tail from the outer ear. Fasten off and weave all ends.
  • Position the head on top of the body. Using the long tail from the head and a yarn needle, sew the head to the body. Fasten off and weave ends.
  • Attach the arms, legs, and tail, one at a time, with the yarn needle and yarn tails. Fasten off and weave all ends.
