Crochet Daisy Granny Square - Free Pattern www.thestitchinmommy.com

A lot of my friends and family ask me if I stop crocheting when the weather gets warmer. The answer is “Of course not!” The art of crochet is becoming so innovative and crocheters are becoming so much more creative with their fiber. We’re not making just hats, scarves and blankets anymore. Nowadays, you can just about crochet anything that you put your mind to. So, when the weather gets warmer, I like to use my yarn for making things around the house like these Daisy Granny Square Coasters. Not only are they cute and perfect for spring, but they are also easily washable which I love. I can be a little crazy when it comes to putting a cup on my table with nothing underneath. My kitchen table is so hard to clean so I always use a coaster. If you’re anything like me, then this is the pattern for you! Keep in mind that if you don’t care for coasters, these Daisy Granny Squares would make an adorable blanket.

If you’re feeling creative, you can add a pretty edging or just an easy single crochet edging in another color. Like I said, I use these as coasters but you can easily make a bunch and turn them into an adorable daisy granny square blanket. The pattern is pretty straightforward and it’s quick to work up. It took me about 15 minutes to make. You may or may not have to block these squares for them to lie flat. I was too lazy to block mine so I just pressed them between a couple of heavy books to get them flat. I hope you enjoy the pattern! Happy crocheting!

    Hello,

I’m in love with this pattern! I am struggling with the start of round 4. It says chain 3 and then 2dc in the same stitch, but which stitch? Sorry I’m fairly new to crochet!

    Thanks

Hi Becky! You will be crocheting into the first stitch, which happens to be the same stitch that the ch-3 is coming out of. I hope that makes sense!

    HI,

I am wondering if you can tell me how to make the mc using just a chain….I am horrible at making a magic circle and I have a friend who really wants this afghan made for her. I have tried numerous times and I can’t get the magic circle in my head. Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!! I have been trying for over 2 years now to make this and I get frustrated and lose hope because my magic circle will not work. Thank you

Hi Julie! If the magic circle isn’t working for you, you can always chain 5, join in beginning ch with a sl st to form a circle and work your dc sts into the circle 🙂 I hope that helps!

I can’t tell you thank you enough. I’ve been looking for something exactly like this and all of a sudden,POOF, it’s in my inbox. I can’t wait to add these to the Afghan I’m already making with different kinds of flowers. It’s going to be the perfect addition. I think you’ll like the colors, I’ll send you a photo when it’s done.

Hi! I love this pattern but am having trouble with creating the petals on the double crochets. When I do the 3 ch, dc, tc, dc, 3 ch, sl st, it gets very bunchy and doesn’t lay flat. Am I doing something incorrectly? I know it’s vague, but maybe there’s an alternative or something? I love this pattern too much to pass it up!
    Thank you!

You can try going down a hook size for the petals. Mine are a little bit bunchy but they flatten out when I block them

Hi Judy! Here is a tutorial for the magic ring: http://oombawkadesigncrochet.com/2014/11/how-to-make-a-magic-ring.html
If it’s something that is still difficult for you, you can always chain 4, slip stitch into a ring, and start your first round of double crochets in the ring. I hope that helps!

I am attempting to make these Daisy Granny squares. I made my magic circle, now the pattern says to change to yarn for flower petal. I don’t know what to go into to start with the Ch3 etc. I am at the point where I have just joined the magic circle. Would you be able to help?

Hi Diane, you would join the new color with a slip stitch into one of the 8 dc stitches that you just worked into the circle.

Those are not only great as coasters, I use them also, but I agree, they would make a terrific afghan. I do a lot of charity crocheting and often use granny squares (and use the join as you go method since it is quicker to put together, at least for me), so these would be great for that. It would just kick it up a notch for something different and pretty. Or even a prayer shawl (do those too). Thank you so much for sharing your pattern.

And no matter how I try, I just can’t get the hang of the magic circle. Believe me, I’ve tried.

There are many tutorials on the web that show how to do a magic circle. It’s super easy and doesn’t leave a “hole” like a chain 2 might. Here’s a tutorial that I personally like but if you’re not comfortable with it, you can always ch 6, sl st into the beginning ch and then continue on with the dc’s. Hope that helps!
