Title: How to Draw Everything
Published by: St. Martin’s Griffin
Author: Gillian Johnson
ISBN: 978-1-250-07823-0

How to Draw Everything by Gillian Johnson, published by St. Martin’s Griffin, is a wonderful book that has been created by Author/Illustrator Gillian Johnson to help you with the basics of drawing. She begins with simple techniques and moves on to more detailed techniques with each section.

The book begins with the author discussing her drawer’s block and how she overcame it by going back to basics and remembering how she learned to love drawing. She then goes on to discuss materials and how to get started. The author starts you off with scribbling to get you into the spirit. She then has you move on to doodle boxes, and subsequently offers some different drawing exercises to help you practice some techniques. She discusses different techniques to help you develop your sketches into more detailed drawings.

Here is a list of the sections in this book:

  • Let’s Get Scribbling!
  • Doodling
  • Drawing Exercises
  • The Visual Workout
  • Draw a House
  • Finger Painting
  • Splodges and Smudges
  • The Easy Way to Understand Perspective
  • Light and Dark, Form and Shadow
  • Drawing People
  • Drawing Faces
  • Animal Crackers
  • How to Draw the Things You Can’t Draw
  • Monsters
  • The Cave
  • Dress These Folks
  • A Project
  • Flowers and Friends

There are so many great projects in this book that will help you become more comfortable with drawing. I, personally, enjoy the section on Drawing Faces since I used to love drawing faces when I was younger. If you would like to brush up on your drawing skills, you should give How to Draw Everything a try! If you already own it, let me know what you think!

Thank you to St. Martin’s Griffin for providing me with a copy of this book for my review! You can see more about How to Draw Everything from Macmillan Publishers. For more information about St. Martin’s Griffin, visit their Website, Facebook, and Twitter.

I love to draw! It’s been quite awhile since I’ve done anything though… I’m trying to begin art journaling and faces are the hardest for me. I adore the look of them in journals, so hoping to master that at some point!!! Thank you for the review on this most interesting book : )

Very interesting, I just might get this book now for my grandson, who is autistic but loves to draw and color, he is quite good but could use a few pointers. Thank you
