I am so excited about the 3 new gorgeous scarf/cowl patterns that we have for you for the month of August!

If you are new to the Scarf of the Month Club, it is a series of free scarf/cowl patterns that are created by The Stitchin’ Mommy (me!) and Oombawka Design. Every month, Rhondda and I will each share one free crochet pattern for a scarf, infinity scarf, or cowl/neckwarmer, through December 2016. Plus, as a bonus, we have some amazing Mystery Designers that will also be providing free scarf patterns. By December, you will have 36 scarf/cowl patterns to choose from to make as gifts or create for yourself!

This Chunky Ribbed Cowl can be made bigger or smaller to suit your needs. It can also be worn as a hood.

Chunky Ribbed Cowl

Materials:

• Approximately 243 yds of Category 6 super bulky yarn; I used Lion Brand Hometown USA in the Dallas Grey colorway*
• Size N 9 mm Crochet Hook*
• Yarn Needle* for weaving ends
• Scissors*

Easy

Abbreviations:

BL – back loop
ch – chain
hdc – half double crochet
dc – double crochet
RS – right side
sk – skip
st(s) – stitch(es)
t-ch – turning chain
WS – wrong side
() – indicates stitch counts
* – indicates instructions to be repeated

Gauge:

9.2 stitches & 4.8 rows = 4″

Finished Size:

Approximately 13″ wide and 37″ long before seamed

Multiple:

Any number of stitches

Notes:

• This pattern is written in US terms.
• Sizing will vary depending on how tightly or loosely you crochet. Gauge is not necessary for this pattern but if you would like to keep the sizing the same, please check your gauge before starting this project.
• This pattern is worked flat and then seamed at the end to form an infinity cowl.

Instructions:

Ch 31
Row 1: (WS) 1 hdc into the 2nd ch from hook and into each st across, turn. (30)
Row 2: (RS) Ch 3 (count as 1 dc), sk the first st, 1 dc into the BL of each st across, turn. (30)
Row 3: Ch 1, 1 hdc into the 2nd ch from hook and into each st across, turn. (30)
Row 4-45: Repeat Rows 2-3
Row 46: Repeat Row 2, fasten off, leave a 12″ long tail for sewing. (30)

Finish:

• With the RS facing out, use the yarn tail and yarn needle to sew the two ends together using the whip stitch or mattress seam method.
• Weave all ends.
