Rainbow Dreams Sack Hat – Free Crochet Pattern in Several Sizes

I am so excited to be participating in the Christmas in July Crochet Along! If you don’t know anything about this Crochet Along, you can find more information in the Introduction post by Marie at Underground Crafter. This week’s theme is baby, kids and teens. I designed this adorable, quick and easy Rainbow Dreams Sack Hat using the gorgeous Lion Brand Mandala Baby yarn. It is soft and cozy and makes a perfect gift. This pattern is available in 8 different sizes ranging from Preemie to 3-5 years. I hope you enjoy the pattern! Happy Crocheting!

Materials:

  • Approximately 100-281 yds of Category 3 Light Weight Yarn (includes yarn for pom-poms); I used Lion Brand Mandala Baby* in the Rainbow Falls colorway.
  • Size H 5mm Crochet Hook*
  • Yarn Needle* for weaving ends
  • Scissors*
  • Large Pom Pom Maker* (optional)

Easy

Abbreviations:

BL – back loop
ch
– chain
dc – double crochet
sc – single crochet
sk – skip
sl st – slip stitch
sp(s) – space(s)
st(s) – stitch(es)
() – indicates stitch counts
* – indicates instructions to be repeated

Gauge:

19 stitches & 8.5 rows = 4″ (in pattern stitch)

Finished Sizes:

Preemie – Fits 11″ head size
Newborn
– Fits 12″ head size
0-3 months – Fits 13″ head size
3-6 months– Fits 14″ head size
6-12 months – Fits 15″ head size
12-24 months – Fits 15.5″ head size
1-3 years – Fits 16″ head size
3-5 years – Fits 18″ head size

Notes:

  • This pattern is written in US terms.
  • Sizing will vary depending on how tightly or loosely you crochet. If you would like to keep the sizing the same, please check your gauge before starting this project.
  • This pattern is worked flat and then seamed at two ends to form the sack hat.
  • A pom-pom maker is not required for this project. You can use other methods to create a pom-pom.

Instructions:

Preemie

Ribbing:

Leaving a 12″ long tail, Ch 7
Row 1:
 1 sc into the 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc into each remaining st across, turn. (6 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1, 1 sc into the first st, 1 sc into the BL of each of the next 4 sts, 1 sc into the last st, turn. (6 sts)
Row 3-42: Repeat Row 2

Turn your work so that you are now working into the side of Rows 1-42, sc 42 sts evenly across, turn. (42 sts)

You will now be working on the main part of the hat.

Row 1: Ch 3 (count as 1 dc), 1 dc into the first st, *sk next 2 sts, [1 sc, 2 dc] into the next st; Repeat across until there are 2 sts remaining, sk the next st, 1 sc into last st, turn. (42 sts)
Row 2: Ch 3 (count as 1 dc), 1 dc into the first st, *sk the next 2 sts, [1 sc, 2 dc] into the next st, Repeat from * across until there are 2 sts remaining, sk the next st, 1 dc into the t-ch, turn. (42 sts)
Row 3-6: Repeat Row 2

Finish:

  • After the last row, fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.
  • Turn your work inside out. Bring the ends together so that the beginning of the rows meets the ends of the rows.
  • Using the first yarn tail and a yarn needle, whip stitch or mattress seam the side of the hat closed. Fasten off.
  • Using the last yarn tail and yarn needle, whip stitch or mattress seam the top of the hat closed. Fasten off.
  • Using a large pom pom maker (or your favorite pom pom-making method), make 2 large pom poms and sew them on to the top of the hat, one in each corner.
  • Weave all ends.

Newborn
