Crochet Puff Stitch Pumpkin Beanie – Free Pattern

Crochet Pumpkin Hat Pattern

Materials:
- Category 4 medium weight yarn in 3 colors:
- Color A: 1 skein each of orange; I used Lily Sugar n’ Cream in Hot Orange*
- Color B: 1 skein each of green; I used Lily Sugar n’ Cream in Mod Green*
- Color C: a small amount of brown; I used Lily Sugar n’ Cream in Warm Brown*
- Size H 5.0mm Crochet Hook*
- Size I 5.5mm Crochet Hook*
- Yarn Needle* for weaving ends
- Stitch Markers*
- Scissors*

Intermediate
Abbreviations:
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
hdc – half double crochet
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch
sp(s) – space(s)
st(s) – stitch(es)
YO – yarn over
() – indicates stitch counts
* – indicates instructions to be repeated
Gauge:
6 stitches and 2 rows = 1″ in sc sts
Size:
3-6 Months
Special Stitches:
Puff Stitch:
- YO, insert hook into next stitch, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook)
- YO again, insert hook into same stitch, pull up another loop (5 loops on hook)
- YO, insert hook into same stitch, pull up another loop (7 loops on hook).
- YO and pull through all 7 loops on hook.
- Chain 1 to close the puff stitch.

Notes:
- This pattern is written in US terms.
- All stitches are worked through both loops unless otherwise noted.
- Portions of this hat pattern are worked in a continuous round. This is where the stitch marker comes in handy.
Instructions:
Hat:
Use Size I 5.5mm Crochet Hook
With Color A, Magic Circle, ch 1.
Round 1: 10 sc into the magic circle (10)
Round 2: 2 dc into each st around (20)
Round 3: *1 dc into the next st, 2 dc into the next st* Repeat around. (30)
Round 4: *1 dc into the next 2 sts, 2 dc into the next st* Repeat around. (40)
Round 5: *Puff st in dc from previous round, sk next st* around (20)
Round 6-12: *Puff st in the space between each puff st from previous round* around. Sl st in last st. (20)
Round 13: Ch 1, sc in first st, and in the top of each puff st and ch 1 space, around. Join in beginning sc. (40)
Round 14: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join to beginning sc. Fasten off, weave ends. (40)
Top:
Use Size I 5.5mm Crochet Hook
With Color B, Magic Circle, ch 1.
Round 1: 10 sc into the circle. (10)
Round 2: 2 dc into each st around. (20)
Round 3: *1 dc into the next st, 2 dc into the next st* Repeat around. (30)
Round 4: *1 dc into the next 2 sts, 2 dc into the next st* Repeat around. (40)
Round 5: *Sc in the next st, sk next st, 3 dc in the next st, sk next st** Repeat from * to ** around. Join in beginning sc. (40)
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.
Vine:
Use Size H 5.0mm Crochet Hook
With Color B,
Row 1: Ch 21. 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each st across. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. (60)
Leaf:
Use Size H 5.0mm Crochet Hook
With Color B,
Row 1: Ch 11. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and into the next 5 chs. [sc, hdc, dc] all into the next st, dc into the next st, hdc into the next st, 2 sc into the last st. Working down the other side of the ch, hdc into the next st, dc into the next st [dc, hdc, sc] all into the last st. Ch 2, turn. (18)
Row 2: 3 dc into same st, sc into the next 3 sts, 2 hdc into the next st, ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc into the next st of the leaf, 2 hdc into the next st, sc into the next 3 sts, [3 dc, sl st] into the last st. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.
Stem:
Use Size H 5.0mm Crochet Hook
With Color C, Magic Circle, ch 1.
Round 1: 6 sc into the circle (6)
Round 2-5: 1 dc into each st around. (6)
Fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing.
Assembly:
- Thread your tapestry needle with the tail end of your stem yarn. Center the stem onto the middle of the Pumpkin Top. Sew the stem onto the top of your hat.
- Now thread your tapestry needle with the tail end of your vine yarn. Position the vine and sew it onto the hat. Do the same with the leaf.
- Take your finished Pumpkin Top and position it onto the top of the hat (using pins to hold it in place if necessary.) Using the tail end of the Pumpkin Top yarn and the tapestry needle, sew the Pumpkin Top to the hat. Fasten off and weave all ends.

What kind of puff stitch are you using?
Hi Kristen! I use this puff stitch – yo, insert hook into next st, [yo, pull up a loop,]x3, yo, pull through all 7 loops on hook, ch 1 to close st. Hope that helps!
