One of the most popular patterns on my blog is my Random Stripe Granny Ripple Afghan. Since releasing that pattern, I have gotten so many requests for a tutorial. Well, I finally had the time to create one! So here it is, a full photo tutorial for the Granny Ripple Stitch pattern. Happy Crocheting!

—UPDATE—

I revised this tutorial on 12/1/2015 to reflect the changes I made to the blanket pattern. This is the current version of the tutorial.

    Hi Amy,
I’ve been crocheting for many years, and can’t wait to try this pattern. I’m confused on the starting chain though. If I want it to be 4feet wide, how many would I chain?

Hi Pat, If you want to make this approximately 4′ x 4′ you will need a starting chain of 196 and you will have to crochet approximately 58 rows.

Awesome pattern and so easy to understand. I learn by way of showing me what to do, and the pictures are very clear. The Granny Stitch is my favorite stitch since it’s so versatile, just like me, lol.

I will have to give this a try when I get all my other projects finished. Right now I am seeing colors. I have a variegated color changing yarn and it tends to make me dizzy, lol. [Even though the colors aren’t bright]

I can’t seem to get my row to end like yours does. I always seem ot end with the skip 5 end instead of the chain three end. Am I doing something wrong. Im using multiples of 18 (180). Should I just adjust the pattern and move on?

Hi Bethany! I’m so sorry that it isn’t working out. The multiple is actually supposed to be 18 x an odd number. You can adjust the pattern but it might not look even with the bottom point of the chevron on the end. If you want to adjust it, you would end with 3dc in the last ch, turn. Ch 3, sk the ch 5, and proceed with the pattern from there. I hope that helps!

Pretty! May I ask how wide the finished product was? And can a beginner manage this project?

This is actually just a tutorial for my Granny Ripple Afghan so I didn’t measure the finished size for the tutorial swatch. This project is quite easy if you follow the tutorial 🙂
