Inspired by the beautiful blooming spring flowers, I created this Springtime Lily Pond Afghan Square! It’s bright, cheerful, and filled with vibrant colors that are perfect for the spring. Materials:

  • Approximately 106 yds of Category 4 Medium Weight Yarn in 6 colors:
    • Approximately 5 yds of Color A; I used Lily Sugar ‘n Cream* in Robin’s Egg Blue
    • Approximately 20 yds Color B; I used Lily Sugar ‘n Cream* in Mod Blue
    • Approximately 15 yds Color C; I used Lily Sugar ‘n Cream* in Black Currant
    • Approximately 4 yds Color D; I used Lily Sugar ‘n Cream* in Hot Green
    • Approximately 42 yds Color E ; I used Lily Sugar ‘n Cream* in Hot Pink
    • Approximately 20 yds Color F; I used Lily Sugar ‘n Cream* in White
  • Size I 5.5mm Crochet Hook*
  • Yarn Needle* for weaving ends
  • Scissors*
  • Foam blocking board*
  • T-Pins*

Abbreviations:

BL – back loop
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
dc2tog – double crochet two together
FPdc – front post double crochet
FPtr – front post treble crochet
hdc – half-double crochet
sc – single crochet
sk – skip
sl st – slip stitch
st(s) – stitch(es)
tr – treble crochet
() – indicates stitch counts
[] – indicates instructions to be worked in one stitch
{} – indicates instructions to be worked together
* – indicates instructions to be repeated

Gauge:

4 stitches and 2 rounds = 1 inch

Finished Size:

Approximately 12″ x 12″

Pattern Notes:

  • This pattern is written in US terms.
  • All stitches are worked through both loops unless otherwise noted.
  • Sizing will vary depending on how tightly or loosely you crochet. Please check your gauge before starting this project.

Instructions:

With Color A

Magic Circle, ch 3 (count as 1 dc here and throughout).
Round 1: 11 dc into the magic circle, join into the top of the ch-3 with a sl st. (12)
Round 2: Ch 3, 1 FPdc around the ch-3 from the previous round, *1 dc into the next st, 1 FPdc around the post of the same st; Repeat from * around, join into the top of the ch-3 with a sl st. (24)

Change to Color B

Round 3: Ch 4 (count as 1 tr here and throughout), 1 FPtr around the ch-3 from previous round, *1 tr into the next st, FPtr around the post of the same st; Repeat from * around, join into the top of the ch-4 with a sl st.(48)

Change to Color C

Round 4: Ch 1 (does not count as first st), *1 hdc into each of the next 11 sts, [dc, tr, ch 1, tr, dc] into the next st; Repeat from * around, join into the beginning hdc with an invisible join. Fasten off. (64)

Join Color D with a sl st into any Ch-1 sp.

Round 5: Ch 2, [dc2tog, change to Color E, {dc2tog, ch 2, dc2tog}, change to Color D, dc2tog, change to Color C] all in the ch-1 sp, skip next st, *1 dc into each of the next 14 sts, change to Color D, [dc2tog, change to Color E, {dc2tog, ch 2, dc2tog}, change to Color D, dc2tog, change to Color C] all in ch-1 sp; Repeat from * 2 more times, 1 dc into each of the next 14 sts join into the beginning dc2tog. Fasten off. (80)

Join Color B into the first dc st after any final corner dc2tog from previous round.

Round 6: Ch 3, 1 dc into each of the next 13 sts, 1 hdc into the BL of the next st, ch 6, skip next 4 sts, 1 hdc into the BL of the next st, *1 dc into each of the next 14 sts, 1 hdc into the BL of the next st, ch 6, skip next 4 sts, 1 hdc into the BL of the next st; Repeat from * 2 more times, join into the top of the beginning ch-3. (88)

Join Color F in the first hdc of any side (before the first dc)

Round 7: Ch 4, 1 tr into each of the next 15 sts *[3 tr, ch 1, 3 tr] into the next ch-6 sp, 1 tr into each of the next 16 sts; Repeat from * 2 more times, [3 tr, ch 1, 3 tr] into the next ch-6 sp, join into the top of the beginning ch-4. (92)

Join Color E by pulling a loop through the last st in Round 7

Round 8: Ch 3, 1 dc into each of the next 20 sts, *[3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc] into the next ch-1 sp, sk the next st, 1 dc into each of the next 21 sts; Repeat from * 2 more times, [3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc] into the next ch-1 sp. sk the next st, join into the top of the beginning ch-3. (112)
Round 9: Ch 3, 1 dc into each of the next 23 sts, *[3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc] into the next ch-1 sp, sk the next st, 1 dc into each of the next 26 sts; Repeat from * 2 more times, [3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc] into the next ch-1 sp, sk the next st, 1 dc into each of the next 2 sts. Fasten off, join into the top of the beginning ch-3 with an invisible join. (132)

    Such a cute pattern, i love it!!
    I have one question….on round 8, because of the placement of the chain 3 i am coming up with 18 DC’s after it, not 20, and then the 3 before the chain 3 which would make up for the missing ones…am i alone in this or did others come up with the same thing? the stitch count is accurate though so i know its coming out correctly which is a relief, thanks for including that!!

      Hi Ashley! I haven’t heard of anyone else coming up with this issue but if you are ending up with the same stitch count you should be fine.
