It’s time to learn a new stitch! This week I am going to show you the Simple Bullion Stitch. I love this stitch because it’s really pretty and looks like a mini tornado. It’s great for all sorts of projects and even though it looks intimidating, it’s fairly simple once you practice. For this tutorial, I will show you how to make an 8″x 8″ square. I hope you enjoy the tutorial! Happy Crocheting!
Simple Bullion Stitch Tutorial and Afghan Square
- Worsted weight yarn in any color of your choosing. I used Lion Brand Cotton-Ease for this example.
- Furls Size I Crochet Hook
- Yarn Needle
ch – chain
st(s) – stitch(es)
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
sk – skip
t-ch – turning chain
4 stitches & 1 row = 1″
Bullion: Wrap yarn loosely around hook 7 times, insert hook into next st, yarn over, draw up a loop, yarn over, carefully draw through all 9 loops on the hook. Ch 1 to lock the stitch. You may have to pick the loops off one by one to get them off of the hook. It takes some practice to get more than one loop off of the hook at a time. The bullion can be done with as many as 10 loops but for this example, I only did 7 so that it is easier to start and since I am using a worsted weight yarn.
Row 2 cont’d: Loosely wrap the yarn around your hook 7 times. Insert the hook into the next stitch.
Note: Usually the bullion stitch calls for wrapping the yarn around 10 times. I thought I would simplify it a bit for this tutorial
Row 2 cont’d: Yarn over again and carefully draw through all of the loops on the hook. Ch 1 to lock the bullion.
Note: It may take some practice to get all of the loops off of the hook at once. If you are having trouble, just carefully pick them off your hook, one by one.
Row 4: Ch 3, sk next st,*work 1 bullion st into the next st, sk the next st** Repeat from * to ** across as shown above, 1 dc in the t-ch, turn.
Repeat Rows 3 and 4 for 13 more rows to complete your 8×8 square.
