Azalea Puff Stitch Hat – Free Crochet Pattern

One of my favorite stitches of all time is the Puff Stitch. I utilized it to design one of my very first hats and I’ve been hooked ever since! Gauge:

20.8 stitches & 16 rows = 4″ (in hdc)

Finished Sizes:

  • 3-5 years – Fits 20″ head size
  • 6-10 years – Fits 21″ head size
  • Adult Small – Fits 22″ head size
  • Adult Medium – Fits 23″ head size
  • Adult Large – Fits 24″ head size

Special Stitches:

Puff Stitch:

  • YO, insert hook into next stitch, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook)
  • YO again, insert hook into same stitch, pull up another loop (5 loops on hook)
  • YO, insert hook into same stitch, pull up another loop (7 loops on hook).
  • YO and pull through all 7 loops on hook.
  • Chain 1 to close the puff stitch.

Notes:

  • This pattern is written in US terms.
  • Sizing will vary depending on how tightly or loosely you crochet. If you would like to keep the sizing the same, please check your gauge before starting this project.
  • This hat is worked in the round and is joined at the end of each round. You will be asked to turn at the end of certain rounds. A stitch marker comes in handy to help you mark the first stitch of each round, which will help you join at the end of the round, but is not required.
  • The ribbing for this hat is worked using a size G 4mm crochet hook for all sizes. The main part of the hat is worked using a size H 5mm crochet hook for all sizes.
  • Finishing instructions for all sizes are located at the end of the pattern.

Instructions:

3-5 Years

Leaving approximately a 8″ long tail, With Size G 4mm Hook,
Ch 15
Row 1:
1 sc into 2nd ch from hook and into each st across, turn. (14 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1, 1 sc into the first st, 1 sc into the BL of the next 12 sts, 1 sc into the last st, turn. (14 sts)
Row 3-94: Repeat Row 2
Turn your work so that you are now working into the side of Rows 1-94, sc 94 sts evenly across, join in beginning sc. (94 sts)

Change to Color B

Main Hat:

With Size H 5mm Hook

Round 1: Ch 1, 1 hdc into each st around, join into the beginning hdc with a sl st, turn. (94 sts)

Finish:

  • Using the yarn tail from the ribbing and yarn needle, sew the ribbing together using the whip stitch method or mattress seam method.
  • Using long tail from the top of the hat and a yarn needle, close up the hole in the center of the hat by weaving the yarn through the front loop of each stitch of the last round. Pull the yarn taught to cinch the center closed and weave yarn around the center to close any gap that may remain.
  • Weave in all remaining ends.
