Echo 12 Inch Square Free Crochet Pattern

I am so excited to be participating in the #MooglyCAL2022! My 12-inch afghan square pattern is pretty simple but has a wonderful texture. I use simple stitches such as half double crochet and double crochet but I do throw in some post stitches to give this square some interest. 12″ after blocking

Notes:

  • This pattern is written in US terms.
  • Sizing will vary depending on how tightly or loosely you crochet. If you would like to keep the sizing the same, please check your gauge before starting this project.
  • Chain stitches are counted in the final stitch count at the end of each round.
  • Color changes are made in the last yarn over of the last stitch of the round, unless otherwise indicated.

Instructions:

With Color A,
Magic Circle, ch 1
Round 1:
Work 8 hdc into the magic circle, join in the beginning hdc with a sl st. (8 sts)
Round 2: Ch 3 (count as 1 dc here and throughout), 1 dc the first st, 2 dc into each st around, join in the beginning ch-3 with a sl st. (16 sts)
Change to Color B
Round 3: Ch 3, 1 dc into each of the next 2 sts, *[2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] into the next st, 1 dc into each of the next 3 sts; Repeat from * around, join in the beginning ch-3 with a sl st. (32 sts)
Join Color C in any ch-1 sp from Round 3
Round 4: Ch 3, [1 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] into the same st as the ch-3, 1 dc into the next st, 1 FPdc around the post of each of the next 5 sts, 1 dc into the next st, *[2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] into the next ch-sp, 1 dc into the next st, 1 FPdc around the post of each of the next 5 sts 1 dc into the next st; Repeat from * around, join in the beginning ch-3 with a sl st. (48 sts)
Join Color B in any ch-1 sp from Round 4
Round 5: Ch 1, *[2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc] into the ch-sp, 1 hdc into each of the next 11 sts; Repeat from * around, join in the beginning hdc with a sl st. (64 sts)
Join Color A in any ch-1 sp from Round 5
Round 6: Ch 3, [1 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] into the same st as the ch-3, 1 dc into each of the next 5 sts, 1 BPdc around the post of each of the next 5 sts, 1 dc into each of the next 5 sts, *[2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] into the next ch-sp, 1 dc into each of the next 5 sts, 1 BPdc around the post of each of the next 5 sts, 1 dc into each of the next 5 sts; Repeat from * around, join in the beginning ch-3 with a sl st. (80 sts)
Join Color C in any ch-1 sp from Round 6
Round 7: Ch 3, [1 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] into the same st as the ch-3, 1 dc into each of the next 19 sts, *[2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] into the next ch-sp, 1 dc into each of the next 19 sts; Repeat from * around, join in the beginning ch-3 with a sl st. (96 sts)
Join Color B in any ch-1 sp from Round 7
Round 8: Ch 3, [1 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] into the same st as the ch-3, 1 dc into each of the next 9 sts, 1 BPdc around the post of each of the next 5 sts, 1 dc into each of the next 9 sts, *[2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] into the next ch-sp, 1 dc into each of the next 9 sts, 1 BPdc around the post of each of the next 5 sts, 1 dc into each of the next 9 sts; Repeat from * around, join in the beginning ch-3 with a sl st. (112 sts)
Join Color C in any ch-1 sp from Round 8
Round 9: Ch 3, [1 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] into the same st as the ch-3, 1 dc into each of the next 27 sts, *[2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] into the next ch-sp, 1 dc into each of the next 27 sts; Repeat from * around, join in the beginning ch-3 with a sl st. (128 sts)
Join Color A in any ch-1 sp from Round 9
Round 10: Ch 3, [1 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] into the same st as the ch-3, 1 dc into each of the next 13 sts, 1 BPdc around the post of each of the next 5 sts, 1 dc into each of the next 13 sts, *[2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] into the next ch-sp, 1 dc into each of the next 13 sts, 1 BPdc around the post of each of the next 5 sts, 1 dc into each of the next 13 sts; Repeat from * around, join in the beginning ch-3 with a sl st. (144 sts)
Join Color B in any ch-1 sp from Round 10
Round 11: Ch 3, [1 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] into the same st as the ch-3, 1 dc into each of the next 35 sts, *[2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] into the next ch-sp, 1 dc into each of the next 35 sts; Repeat from * around, join in the beginning ch-3 with a sl st. (160 sts)

Finish:

  • Fasten off, weave all ends.
  • Wet block to achieve final size of 12 inches.
