Aurora Headband/Earwarmer – Free Crochet Pattern

My pattern contribution is a quick and easy headband/earwarmer that is perfect for the colder months. It would even make for a great stocking stuffer! Materials:

• Approximately 62-77 yds of Category 4 Medium Weight Yarn; I used Knit Picks Chroma Worsted* in the Pegasus colorway
• Size I 5.5 mm Furls Streamline Galaxy Polaris Crochet Hook*
• Yarn Needle* for weaving ends
• Scissors*

Skill Level:

Intermediate

Abbreviations:

ch(s) – chain(s)
hdc – half double crochet
sc – single crochet
sk – skip
st(s) – stitch(es)
() – indicates stitch counts
* – indicates instructions to be repeated

Gauge:

15.6 stitches & 10.4 rows = 4″ (in pattern st)

Finished Sizes:

• Teen – Fits 21″ head size
• Adult Small – Fits 22″ head size
• Adult Medium – Fits 23″ head size
• Adult Large – Fits 24″ head size

Multiple:

Chain a multiple of 2

Notes:

• This pattern is written in US terms.
• Sizing will vary depending on how tightly or loosely you crochet. If you would like to keep the sizing the same, please check your gauge before starting this project.
• This pattern is worked flat and seamed at the ends to create the headband/earwarmer (see finishing instructions below for seaming information.)

Special Stitches:

Woven Stitch:

• Yarn over, insert hook into indicated stitch.
• Yarn over, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook.)
• Pull first loop through the middle loop on hook.
• Yarn over, pull through both remaining loops on hook.
• Work one hdc into the same stitch.

Instructions:

Teen:

Ch 74
Row 1: 1 sc into the 2nd ch from hook, work 1 woven st into the next st, *sk the next st, work 1 woven st into the next st; Repeat from * across until there is 1 st remaining, 1 sc into the last st, turn. (74 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1,1 sc into the first st, *sk the next st, work 1 woven st into the next st; Repeat from * across until there is 1 st remaining, work 1 sc into the last st, turn. (74 sts)
Row 3-8: Repeat Row 2
Row 9: Repeat Row 2, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing. (74 sts)

Adult Small:

Ch 78
Row 1: 1 sc into the 2nd ch from hook, work 1 woven st into the next st, *sk the next st, work 1 woven st into the next st; Repeat from * across until there is 1 st remaining, 1 sc into the last st, turn. (78 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1,1 sc into the first st, *sk the next st, work 1 woven st into the next st; Repeat from * across until there is 1 st remaining, work 1 sc into the last st, turn. (78 sts)
Row 3-8: Repeat Row 2
Row 9: Repeat Row 2, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing. (78 sts)

Adult Medium:

Ch 82
Row 1: 1 sc into the 2nd ch from hook, work 1 woven st into the next st, *sk the next st, work 1 woven st into the next st; Repeat from * across until there is 1 st remaining, 1 sc into the last st, turn. (82 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1,1 sc into the first st, *sk the next st, work 1 woven st into the next st; Repeat from * across until there is 1 st remaining, work 1 sc into the last st, turn. (82 sts)
Row 3-8: Repeat Row 2
Row 9: Repeat Row 2, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing. (82 sts)

Adult Large:

Ch 86
Row 1: 1 sc into the 2nd ch from hook, work 1 woven st into the next st, *sk the next st, work 1 woven st into the next st; Repeat from * across until there is 1 st remaining, 1 sc into the last st, turn. (86 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1,1 sc into the first st, *sk the next st, work 1 woven st into the next st; Repeat from * across until there is 1 st remaining, work 1 sc into the last st, turn. (86 sts)
Row 3-8: Repeat Row 2
Row 9: Repeat Row 2, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing. (86 sts)

Finish:

• Lay your headband flat. Bring the ends together so that they meet in the middle.
• Fold each end in half lengthwise and pinch them at the ends.
• Place the two folded ends together, sandwiching them together and making sure the stitches are aligned.
• Using the yarn tail and yarn needle, stitch the ends together, making sure to work through all four pieces of the fabric.
• Fasten off, weave all ends.
• Turn the headband inside out so that the knot is on the inside.
