Baby Bear Lovey Free Crochet Pattern

Abbreviations:

ch – chain
dc – double crochet
sc – single crochet
sc dec – single crochet decrease
sl st(s) – slip stitch(es)
st(s) – stitch(es)
() – indicates stitch counts
* – indicates instructions to be repeated

Gauge:

16 stitches & 14 rows = 4″ (in sc)

Finished Size:

9.5″ x 9.5″ blanket

Notes:

  • This pattern is written in US terms.
  • Sizing will vary depending on how tightly or loosely you crochet. If you would like to keep the sizing the same, please check your gauge before starting this project.
  • The bear head and arms are worked in the round and joined after each round.

Instructions: 

Blanket:
With color A,
With Color A, Ch 43

Row 1: 2 dc into the 4th ch from hook, *sk the next 2 sts, 1 sc into the next st, sk the next 2 sts, 5 dc into the next st; Repeat from * until there are 3 sts remaining, sk the next 2 sts, 1 sc into the last st, turn. (40 sts)
Row 2: Ch 3, 2 dc into the first st (sc from previous row), *sk the next 2 sts, 1 sc into the next st, sk the next 2 sts, 5 dc into the next st; Repeat from * across, 1 sc into the turning ch, turn. (40 sts)
Row 3: Repeat Row 2
Change to Color B
Rows 4-6:
Repeat Row 2
Change to Color C
Rows 7-9:
Repeat Row 2
Change to Color A
Rows 10-12:
Repeat Row 2
Change to Color B
Rows 13-15:
Repeat Row 2
Change to Color C
Rows 16-18:
Repeat Row 2
Change to Color A
Rows 19-20:
Repeat Row 2
Row 21: Repeat Row 2, fasten off.

Bear Head:
With Color D:
Magic Circle, ch 1

Round 1: Work 6 sc into the magic circle, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (6 sts)
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc into each st around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (12 sts)
Round 3: Ch 1, *1 sc into the next st, 2 sc into the next st; Repeat from * around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (18 sts)
Round 4: Ch 1, *2 sc into the next st, 1 sc into each of the next 2 sts; Repeat from * around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (24 sts)
Round 5: Ch 1, *1 sc into each of the next 3 sts, 2 sc into the next st; Repeat from * around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (30 sts)
Round 6: Ch 1, 1 sc into each st around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (30 sts)
Rounds 7-11: Repeat Round 6
Round 13: Ch 1, *1 sc into each of the next 3 sts, 1 sc dec over the next 2 sts; Repeat from * around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (24 sts)
Round 14: Ch 1, *1 sc into each of the next 2 sts, 1 sc dec over the next 2 sts; Repeat from * around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (18 sts)
Begin stuffing with fiber fill
Round 15: Ch 1, *1 sc into the next st, 1 sc dec over the next 2 sts; Repeat from * around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (12 sts)
Continue stuffing until you are satisfied with the amount of fiber fill.
Round 16: Ch 1, *1 sc dec over the next 2 sts; Repeat from * around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing.(6 sts)

Bear Arms (Make 2):
With Color D:
Round 1:
Work 6 sc into the magic circle, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (6 sts)
Round 2: Ch 1, 1 sc into each st around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (6 sts)
Rounds 3-9: Repeat Round 2
Round 10: Repeat Round 2, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing.

Bear Ears (Make 2):
With Color D:
Round 1:
Work 6 sc into the magic circle, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (6 sts)
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc into each st around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st. (12 sts)
Round 3: Ch 1, *1 sc into the next st, 2 sc into the next st; Repeat from * around, join into the beginning sc with a sl st, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing.(18 sts)

Finish:

  • To assemble: attach the arms to the bottom of the head using the yarn tail and yarn needle. I use a whip stitch method but use any method that is comfortable.
  • Fold the ear in half and use the yarn tail to sew it together to make a half-moon shape, fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.
  • Position the ears on top of the head and sew using the yarn tails and yarn needle. Fasten off.
  • Using the yarn tail from the bear head, attach to the center of the lovey using your yarn needle. Make sure to secure the head to the blanket. Fasten off securely.
  • Weave any other remaining ends.
