CL – cluster
dc – double crochet
dc5tog – double crochet five stitches together
sc – single crochet
st(s) – stitch(es)
() – indicates stitch counts
* – indicates instructions to be repeated

Gauge:

14 stitches & 11.6 rows = 4″ (in pattern stitch)

Finished Size:

Approximately 8.5″ x 8.5″

Notes:

  • This pattern is written in US crochet terms.
  • The sizes are an approximation. They will not be exact. Sizing will vary depending on how tightly or loosely you crochet. Gauge is not necessary for this pattern but if you would like to keep the sizing the same, please check your gauge before starting this project.
  • Written instructions are listed below, after the photo tutorial.
  • Each dc5tog CL counts as 1 st in the stitch count at the end of the row.

Photo Tutorial:

Ch 31

Row 1: 1 sc into the 2nd ch from hook

Row 1 cont’d: 1 sc into each remaining st across, turn.

 Row 2: Ch 1, 1 sc into the first st, 1 sc into the next st

Row 2 cont’d: Begin working a dc5tog CL by yarning over and inserting your hook into the next st, pull up a loop

 Row 2 cont’d: Yarn over and pull through 2 loops

Row 2 cont’d: Yarn over, insert hook into same st, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops. Repeat this 3 more times. You will have 6 loops on your hook.

Row 2 cont’d: Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops. 1 dc5tog CL made.

Row 2 cont’d: *1 sc into each of the next 2 sts, work 1 dc5tog CL into the next st;

Row 2 cont’d: Repeat from * across, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1

Row 3 cont’d: 1 sc into each dc5tog CL and each sc across, turn.

Row 4: Ch 1

Row 4 cont’d: work 1 dc5tog CL into the first st,

Row 4 cont’d: *1 sc into each of the next 2 sts,

Row 4 cont’d: work 1 dc5tog CL into the next st; Repeat from * across, turn.

Row 5: Ch 1

Row 5 cont’d: 1 sc into the first st and into each st across, turn.

Rows 6-25: Repeat Rows 2-5
Rows 26-29: Repeat Rows 2-5. Fasten off, weave ends.

Row 2: Ch 1, 1 sc into the first st, 1 sc into the next st, work 1 dc5tog CL into the next st, *1 sc into each of the next 2 sts, work 1 dc5tog CL into the next st; Repeat from * across, turn. (42 sts)
Row 3: Ch 1, 1 sc into each st across, turn. (42 sts)
Row 4: Ch 1, work 1 dc5tog CL into the first st, 1 sc into each of the next 2 sts, *work 1 dc5tog CL into the next st, 1 sc into each of the next 2 sts; Repeat from * across, turn. (42 sts)
Row 5: Ch 1, 1 sc into each st across, turn. (42 sts)
Rows 6-9: Repeat Rows 2-5

Finish (optional):

You can add a simple border by joining your yarn with a sl st in one of the stitches, sc evenly around placing 3 sc sts in each corner, join in beginning sc with an invisible join. Fasten off, weave ends.
