A couple of months ago, we moved from our tiny apartment in the city to a four bedroom house in the suburbs. A week later, our little boy came into the world. We barely unpacked the essential boxes and were not even thinking about setting up the kids’ rooms. The house needed some work and we were just not prepared for it all. Finally, after two months and a small budget, we were able to get the baby’s nursery together using some adorable items from Disney Baby!

I decorated his room with a Nemo theme, with products by Disney Baby. I headed to my local Walmart to pick up the products I needed. I found all of my items in the Baby Gear/Furniture aisle which was in the center of the store. The bedding were all on display on a set of peg board shelves. There were so many cute collections to choose from but I decided on the Nemo Day at Sea 3-Piece Crib Bedding Set because I just love Nemo and the set matched perfectly with color that we painted the baby’s room. I picked up a few extra accessories to match and brought them home. Incorporating some items that we already had in the house, I started fixing the nursery.

Here’s how we got started:

First, my hubby put the crib together. We were lucky that we were able to reuse the crib and other nursery furniture from our daughter since we are buying her a new furniture set, complete with her very own big girl bed.

I washed all of the bedding and started working on the crib by adding the dust ruffle.

I put the sheet onto the mattress and added the comforter. I then started to accessorize with a cute Nemo mobile.

I added a matching diaper stacker…

and a Nemo changing pad cover to the changing table.

I added a cute little wooden stool that we had hanging around the house and dressed it up with a sweet little bear that we received at the hospital.

I added a few little touches with baskets that I had in my craft room and a washi tape craft that I created for just a few dollars!

Here’s how I made the washi tape art:

Materials needed:

  • An 8×10 picture frame
  • 2 pieces of cardstock or thick paper
  • Washi tape in several colors, to match your room theme
  • Scissors and/or exacto knife
  • Self-healing cutting board or cutting surface
  • Pencil

First, I created a design in Photoshop. I used the letter “L” for Lucas and added a seashell, starfish, and fish to go with my Nemo theme. If you aren’t handy with Photoshop, you can always draw it by hand or use a program like PicMonkey which is free.

I printed out my design on one piece of cardstock. I placed it on a self-healing cutting board and used my exacto knife to cut the shapes out to create a stencil. Note: If you don’t have an exacto knife, you can use a pair of scissors. Just poke a hole in the center of each image and place the scissors in the center to start cutting the inside of the image out.

I placed the stencil on top of the other piece of cardstock and using a pencil, I ever so lightly traced the shapes.

Now it’s time for some fun! Start cutting a few pieces of your washi tape and start layering them onto the shapes that you just traced onto the cardstock. Make sure to cover the whole shape. It’s ok to overlap.

Lay the stencil on top of the washi taped cardstock

Insert your art into your frame and now you are all done!

I love how my inexpensive piece of art turned out! I spent about $4 for the frame at Walmart and I used things that I already had in my craft room: washi tape and paper! If you don’t have washi tape, you can try using a glue stick and some tissue paper, paint it, or even color it in with crayons!

I haven’t completely finished the nursery but I think we are off to a good start. I still want to add some underwater/Nemo-themed wall decor and add a few more pieces of furniture like a rocking chair and dress the room up with a cute rug. I absolutely love the look of the nursery so far! It’s starting to look more like a room and less like a war zone. I wanted the room to be playful and fun but also a serene place for Lucas to relax in an I think I have accomplished that with the help of Disney Baby!
