Little Crown Easy Newborn Cap – Free Pattern

Want to make your own gift for a new mother but don’t have a lot of time? This “Little Crown” newborn cap takes me about an hour and a half to make. The pattern is simple, but the brim edging gives the cap a distinctive look. It’s a perfect project for the last-minute baby shower or for those times when you’d just like to tell a mother-to-be, “I’m thinking of you and wishing you well.” It should fit a newborn or preemie.

Materials:

• Crochet hook size G-6 (4 mm)
• Sport or baby weight yarn (Fine 2) (Such as Bernat Softee Baby)
• Yarn needle to weave in ends

Abbreviations:

ch – chain
dc – double crochet
lp – loop
rep – repeat
sk – skip
sl st – slip stitch
st(s) – stitch, stitches

Gauge:

9 dc and 6 rows = 2 inches

Finished Size:

5 in. from crown to tip of edging; 12-in. circumference at brim when not stretched; up to 16½-in. circumference when stretched

Notes:

• The size of the cap can be adjusted slightly by using a larger or smaller hook or by changing your gauge. To “turn” in row 11, turn work so that you can work row 11 in the opposite direction from rows 1-10. This reverses the “right” and “wrong” sides so that the “right” side will show when the brim is turned up. For a striking variation, or when you don’t know if the baby is a boy or a girl, try a variegated or self-striping multicolored yarn.

Instructions:

Ch 3, sl st to close lp (make a ring), leaving a 4-in. tail.

Row 1: Ch 2 (counts as dc), 11 dc into ring, sl st in top ch to close, pull the yarn tail tightly to close the first row (12 dc).
Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as dc), dc in next st, 2 dc in next st and in each st around, dc in last st, sl st in top ch to close (24 dc).
Row 3: Ch 2, *dc in next st, 2 dc in next st; rep from * around, skip last st, sl st to close (36 dc).
Row 4: Ch 2, dc in next st, *2 dc in next st, dc in each of next 2 sts; rep from * around, sk last st, sl st to close (48 dc).
Row 5: Ch 2, dc in each st around, skip last st, sl st to close (48 dc).
Rows 6-10: Rep row 5.
Row 11: Ch 2, turn, dc in each st around, sk last st, sl st to close.
Row 12: Ch 2, dc in each st around, sk last st, sl st to close.
Row 13: Rep row 12.
Row 14: Ch 3, sk next stitch, sl st in next st, *ch3, sk next stitch, sl st in next st; repeat from * around.

Fasten off.
Turn inside-out to weave in ends; turn right-side out; turn up the brim.
