Crochet Every Way Stitch Dictionary Book Review and Giveaway

Crochet Every Way Stitch Dictionary by Dora Ohrenstein is an amazing, revolutionary stitch dictionary that not only teaches you 125 essential crochet stitch patterns, but also how to increase and decrease these stitch patterns in three different ways. Dora goes into great detail about how to increase and decrease these stitch patterns without shaping, with shaping at the edges, and with internal shaping, which is great if you want to use these stitch patterns for garment projects.  I hope you enjoy my review of the book and enter the lovely giveaway at the end. Happy crocheting!

Crochet Every Way Stitch Dictionary

Crochet Every Way Stitch Dictionary contains instructions for 125 stitch patterns that you can turn into many amazing projects!

This book starts off with a wonderful introduction from Dora Ohrenstein. Dora talks about how she discovered crochet and how she learned how to shape stitch patterns.

Dora then moves on to discuss what stitch patterns are and how they are created. She goes into great detail which is super helpful if you are a beginner crocheter. She discusses how the stitch patterns are organized into six different chapters to help you easily find the type of stitch pattern you are looking for. Dora also goes into an in-depth discussion about pattern repeats. I found that the way she explains pattern repeats is very helpful for beginners to understand.

Before moving on to the actual stitch patterns, Dora has a few pages dedicated to shaping. She discusses what shaping is and the different types of shaping that she uses in the book. She talks about edge shaping, internal shaping, circular shaping, and shaping in a pattern. Dora also talks about how to enlarge a stitch pattern that s difficult or can’t be shaped. Before diving into the stitch patterns, there is a great section on how to shape basic stitches so that you can gain an understanding of how the process works. Next, there is a section called “How to Use This Book” with information about swatches, charts, repeats, multiples, and more. There is also an abbreviations guide and symbol key to help you navigate the patterns in this book.

We now move on to the stitch patterns which are organized by chapters. Chapter One discusses Closed Stitches such as the seed stitch, griddle stitch, and herringbone. Chapter Two discusses Mesh, Filet, and Easy Lace stitch patterns. In this chapter you will find the brick stitch, granny stitch, and many variations of a v-stitch. Chapter Three discusses Textured Stitches such as the basketweave stitch, cables, ribbed stitches, bobbles, and popcorns. Chapter Four discusses Exploding Shells. You will find many different shell patterns from the classic shell to different types of fan stitches. Chapter Five discusses Classic Lace stitches which include pineapple lace, spider lace, cluster lace, and more. Chapter Six discusses Undulating Stitches: Ripples and Waves. Here you will find several different types of ripple, wave, and chevron patterns.

Each stitch pattern in this book includes information for the pattern repeat, stitch pattern multiple, number of rows in the stitch pattern repeat, and whether the piece is reversible or not. Each pattern also comes with detailed instruction for crocheting a basic swatch along with detailed instructions on how to shape your pattern in additional ways.

At the very end of the book you will find Dora’s acknowledgements as well as a helpful index of stitches.
